Average First Arrival Date for Migrant Birds in the Tanana Valley

The upper Tanana Valley is an excellent location for observing migratory birds.  Many migrants travel down the Tanana River Valley — which is relatively narrow in the Delta Junction vicinity.  Sawmill Creek Road is one good location as it crosses a substantial portion of the valley.

Birdwatchers will not be disappointed by a trek to interior Alaska. Native Alaskan birds include woodpeckers, yellowlegs, cranes, puffins, eagles, snow geese, ravens, chickadees, gulls, ospreys and loons. Several owl varieties such as the boreal owl, great gray owl and the northern hawk owl are native Alaskan birds. Peregrine falcons make an annual trip to their nesting sites in Alaska.
